Kozilek, Butcher of Truth Revealed in Arcana

I’m somewhat of a Magic Arcana junky. Today was one of those days that reinforce this addiction. I was greeted by this innocent looking article on Eye of Ugin, a Legendary land from Worldwake which piqued our collective Magic player Borg consciousness.

I’m a computer scientist by trade, and if I were paying attention, I’d have noticed that the “Arcana Archive” link didn’t work, and that a left-click revealed the telltale Flash menu. But I didn’t. I clicked, as instructed, on the legendary Eye and was pleased with the cool flash animation of the gargantuan, legendary, colorless eldrazi creature who came to life and demolished my browser window.

In the end, I was looking at this bad boy:

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
Kozilek, Butcher of Truth

Holy smokes, eh?

So the cat’s out of the bag here. The first thing I noticed was the ridiculously awesome transparent card frame. How cool is that? It’s like WotC took note of those infamous full-frame art mod cards, and decided to do a series of their own!

The next thing I notice is that Krozilek is a 10-drop 12/12. He’s Phyrexian Dreadnought‘s cousin from the styx, I think. And he draws you four card when you cast him? Yow! This is also an elegant new way to phrase the whole “if you played ~this~ from your hand” template… “cast” is all you really ever needed to say.

Annihilator 4. So this looks like a pretty damn crazy mechanic. Sacrifice N permanents upon attack? Damn. I hope I have my Bloodthorn Taunter in play by the time he hits!

And then, of course, no megalithic super-creature is complete without the “Darksteel Colossus clause” AKA the “Serra Avatar Clause.” AKA, “you think we’re dumb enough to let you reanimate this?”

All in all, this is a pretty cool glimpse at things to come. I’m super pumped about the stylish execution of this gaea-themed, lands-come-alive, Solaris sort of meme that Rise of the Eldrazi seems to represent. Very cool indeed.

I wonder whether this guy has a future in EDH as General…?

Hypergenesis players, look alive!

  1. Just to clarify, ‘cast’ is just the new term for ‘play’. It’s a big deal because you get to draw the cards even if he is countered.

I’m not a big fan of ‘Annihilator’. How many cards could possibly have this mechanic? I’m sure it will be one of those keywords where one or two are maybe playable in constructed and the others suck (like clash). I honestly can’t see them printing a creature with anywhere decent P/T for less than 4 mana.

One thing I do like is the new card frame. It’s awesome! I can’t wait to see more of ROE.

  2. Sean, I beg to differ… consider as a hypothetical:

    Annihilator Ogre
    3
    Creature – Eldrazi Bear
    Annihilate 1
    2/2

Most broken card ever? Or within the realm of possibility?

How far would it have to go to become obviously within the realm of possibility?

    Annihilator Plant
    4
    Creature – Eldrazi Plant
    Annihilate 1
    0/2

??? Would this see play? Somewhere between the ogre and the plant lies your answer.

    Your thoughts?

  3. A. Ogre seems outside the realm of possibility.

    T1 arbor elf.
    T2 annihilator ogre.
    T3 win

I don’t think they’ll put annihilate on anything under CMC 5 (without heavy drawback). Just a hunch.

  4. Any 3cc or even 4cc card with Annihilate could see play in Vintage, even with the creature-involving weaknessess any stax deck could consider playing them because the one-side effect comparing to smokestack.

Annihilate in a relatively low cc card could be broken.

  5. I saw this card and then bought a play set of flash, only to realise it is banned in legacy and restricted in vintage. oh well. you see with flash this generates the same amount of CA as ancestral recall and at the same time puts the combo backn into your library, i thought it would be absurd in legacy but i was wrong.

  6. I’ve been chatting with James about using annihilator as a drawback. For your consideration:

    0
    Artifact of Death
Tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
Creatures your opponents control gain Annihilator 1.
Artifact of Death cannot be sacrificed.

Anybody have an opinion on this one?

  7. Annihilator could be used as a drawback, but only on something insane. Consider:

    2
    Stone of War
Tap: Add one colorless mana to your mana pool.
Creatures your opponents control gain Annihilator 1.
    You cannot lose the game.
